The Common Knowledge Centre

Sustainability Policy

Version 2.0 - Updated February 2026

Common Knowledge is a non-profit social enterprise based on 50 acres in the Burren. We run courses, community projects, events and accommodation rooted in practical sustainability, heritage skills and regenerative land stewardship.

We are committed to operating as a regenerative, community-rooted organisation that protects and enhances the natural, cultural and social heritage of the Burren, while continuously improving our environmental performance and contributing positively to our local economy.

Sustainability is central to our purpose through which we commit to strengthening our environmental, social, cultural and economic conditions while supporting the unique landscape, heritage and communities of County Clare. Through continuous improvement, collaboration and careful management, we aim to contribute positively to the Burren & Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark while operating a resilient and responsible organisation.

1. Working Together

We collaborate with local stakeholders and members of the Burren EcoTourism Network (BEN) to support the development of the Burren as a sustainable tourism destination.

  • We engage in BEN training and networking initiatives.

  • We recommend local businesses, producers and attractions to our guests.

  • We partner with schools, universities and community groups on educational and community-based initiatives.

  • We encourage visitors to stay longer, travel responsibly and experience the Burren in a way that respects its people and place.

Our aim is to contribute to a tourism model that strengthens, rather than strains, the local area.

2. A Cared-for Landscape

As custodians of 50 acres in the Burren, we actively steward land for biodiversity, regenerative food production and sustainable land management.

  • We enhance biodiversity through tree planting, habitat protection, pond creation and low-impact land practices .

  • We explore regenerative approaches to sustainable growing and encourage the proliferation of these praqctices through teaching.

  • We apply Leave No Trace principles across our programmes, with links to the principles on our website and Leave No Trace guides available to guests.

  • We prioritise natural and sustainable materials in construction and site upgrades.

  • We recognise that operating in this landscape is a privilege and a responsibility.

3. A Well-understood Heritage

We are committed to helping visitors understand and appreciate the Burren’s natural, built and cultural heritage.

  • More than 50% of our courses are linked to heritage skills including traditional building, natural materials, food traditions and land-based practices .

  • We provide interpretation through storytelling, practical demonstrations and contextual information during courses and events.

  • We encourage guests to visit local heritage sites and support other regional attractions.

We believe that deeper understanding leads to greater respect and care.

4. Vibrant Communities

Community building is central to our work.

  • Through our Meitheal projects and volunteering programmes, we foster collaboration and social connection.

  • We host events and gatherings that are open to both local residents and visitors.

  • We work with local organisations and community networks.

  • We strive to ensure that tourism activity contributes positively to local wellbeing and inclusion.

Our long-term vision is an Ireland of confident, capable and connected people — starting in our own community

5. Strengthened Livelihoods

We contribute to the local economy by:

  • Employing local staff and contractors where possible.

  • Working with local tradespeople and service providers.

  • Prioritising local and regenerative food producers in our catering and hospitality .

  • Attracting visitors through year-round courses and retreats, helping to reduce tourism seasonality.

We aim to support stable, meaningful employment and local enterprise in the region.

6. Resource Efficiency

We actively measure and manage our use of resources to reduce environmental impact.

  • We explore renewable energy systems and low-impact infrastructure solutions .

  • We grow food on-site through gardens and polytunnels for educational and catering use.

We are committed to continuous improvement in energy efficiency, waste reduction and responsible procurement.

7. Sustainable Management (Policy & Planning)

Our 2024–2026 “Scaling Sustainably” strategy sets measurable goals across skills, community, land stewardship and organisational sustainability .

  • We review our sustainability goals annually.

  • We monitor participation, social impact and environmental performance.

  • Our governance structure provides oversight and accountability.

  • We see sustainability as an ongoing process of learning, reflection and action. As such our Sustainability Action Plan is developed and refined in line with the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Code of Practice.

We are proud to live and work in the Burren and recognise the responsibility that comes with hosting visitors in this unique landscape. Common Knowledge exists to share skills for a truly sustainable life and to demonstrate how tourism, land stewardship and community can work together in balance. We remain committed to continuous improvement and to protecting and celebrating the Burren & Cliffs of Moher for future generations.
