How is the course structured?
Each day balances relaxed classroom learning with plenty of hands-on time in the garden getting our hands dirty!
On Saturday we begin with an introduction to the principles of organic gardening and exploring people’s motivations for growing their own food. We then take a guided tour of the food growing gardens at Common Knowledge, harvesting fresh salad along the way for lunch. The afternoon is spent seed sowing, companion planting, potting on, building simple growing beds, and planting vegetables.
On Sunday we start indoors with introduction to soil health, crop rotation, and natural pest and disease control. The rest of the day is spent outdoors making organic fertilisers and pest deterrents, creating compost, building biodiversity in the garden, practicing propagation, and planning the rest of your growing year.
