Join us with the incredible Annie Gambrill of Killala Woolcraft, while we delve into the rich history of weaving and the versatile techniques of the rigid heddle loom. From setting up the warp to weaving the weft, embark on a creative journey where colors, textures, and individual expression intertwine to craft a unique masterpiece.

On this course, you’ll learn:

  • The fundamentals of weaving, including an introduction to the rigid heddle loom and its historical significance.

  • Step-by-step instructions on setting up and winding the warp, laying the foundation for your scarf.

  • Techniques for weaving the weft, embracing the freedom to experiment with colors and textures on our traditional samplet loom.

What’s included?

The course fee of €380 fees cover tuition, the use of tools and materials, and two wholesome and nutritious daily meals each day curated by our on-site chef, as well as tea, coffee and cake when it is most needed. *There is mandatory site safety gear required to participate in this course, please see below.

Additional Information

  • We will provide you with a loan of a hi-visibility vest for use when on-site. For your own safety, no loose-fitting clothing or shorts are permitted, and you should wear long sleeves.

    The following safety gear is required and mandatory to participate in the course:

    • Steel toe-capped boots. No trainers, shoes or wellies will be allowed on site due to risk of injury.

    • Protective gloves*

    • Safety glasses*

    Knee pads are also useful and will provide greater comfort. You may already have many of these items or want to pick them up yourself. These items are available in our optional Masonry Site & Safety Kit. This is available to purchase as an add on to your course ticket.

Instructing this course

  • Annie Gambrill

    Annie is a shepherdess, ambassador for heritage crafts and a teacher of traditional hand spinning, weaving and natural dyeing. Originally from West Sussex and now living in North Mayo, she specialises in spinning and weaving Irish sheep's wool and alpaca as well as designing and weaving her own unique tweed.

    She was taught to spin yarn at the age of 10 and is a self taught weaver, with an emphasis on free flow weaving using both rigid heddle looms and vintage 4 shaft looms.
