Join our 2024 instructor team at The Common Knowledge Centre

Calling all passionate practitioners, community-oriented craftspeople and sustainability-led skill sharers. We are seeking expressions of interest from people who are eager to pass on their expertise in building, making, mending or growing by joining the instructor team at The Common Knowledge Centre in 2024.

At Common Knowledge, we understand the impact that sharing practical skills can have in supporting people to live a truly sustainable life. So if you possess a trade, a craft, or a valuable skill and feel passionate about the idea of sharing that skill with our community, we’d love to hear from you.

Whether you are highly experienced, or just starting your journey as a skill sharer, we’re interested in hearing from you. Your enthusiasm for your skill is what makes our community thrive, and we are eager to hear from you. If you are living in the local area, we’re especially interested in hearing from you.

  • Generally, we engage instructors on a per course basis, it’s seasonal or occasional work. Many of our instructors have returned course after course and have spent weeks on end with us in the process.

We are both looking for people to join as instructors on existing courses, and potentially for those who can help to broaden our programme with new courses.

There are a range of opportunities available on our instructor team and will support the growth of those working with us.

Trainee Instructor - At an earlier stage of mastering your skill, you also want to build confidence in sharing your skills with other people.

Instructor - You demonstrate significant experience with your skill and have experience sharing with other people. You are confident to share your skills with groups of up to 16 people.

Lead Instructor - You are highly experienced in both your skill, and sharing it with other people. You are confident in leading other instructors and holding space for course groups of up to 32 people.

  • By sharing your skills at Common Knowledge, you’ll gain access to a supportive network of like-minded individuals who are dedicated to fostering an open and caring learning environment. We provide payment, a platform for you to demonstrate your skills, the opportunity to connect with eager learners, and make a meaningful impact in peoples’ lives. We will assist and help you to design engaging and effective teaching experiences, ensuring that your knowledge is shared in the best possible way.

With our new Centre, we have extensive facilities that offer a high quality of experience to you and those learning from you. From our fully equipped workshop and event spaces to our commercial kitchen that serves the most delicious and nutritious food, we have invested hugely in creating a learning environment that is fit for purpose, joyful and inclusive.  Together, we can create a positive learning environment where individuals can discover and explore new  skills. Your passion and expertise have the potential to transform lives and empower others on their learning journey.

  • We are interested particularly in skills that relate to our four key focus areas as follows.

Building - For example, bricklaying, plastering, plumbing, natural building.

Making - For example, furniture making, 3D printing, sewing and ceramics.

Mending - For example, furniture upholstery and upcycling, equipment maintenance, darning etc.

Growing - For example, organic growing, grafting, animal raising, traditional farming etc.

These examples are not exhaustive and we encourage you not to feel restricted in your application.

  • We value your lived experience with the skill and ability to share it in an inspiring, inclusive way above technical proficiency or qualifications.

We are interested in expressions of interest from people at all levels of experience.

We also believe that once we share certain core values, our differences enable us to be a better team – one that makes better decisions, is more creative and creates more long-term impact.

We are committed to creating an increasingly diverse and inclusive social enterprise, and particularly encourage you to apply if you identify with a traditionally underrepresented group, due to your gender identity, employment status, nationality, neurodiversity, sex, marital status, family status, socioeconomic background, age, disability, sexual orientation, race, religion, or membership of Traveller or other minority ethnic groups.

We encourage you to submit your interest before the 31st October, and will respond to all submissions by the end of November.
